Nadja works as a bailiff’s clerk, she lives together with her partner, has one child from a previous marriage and three plus children.

Nadia only wanted to do the interview in writing. She told me that she feels very insecure and that she lacks a lot of self-confidence. In her opinion, she didn’t have much to say on the subject. As the mother of a daughter with dyspraxia, she has little time to deal with it. During the photo session she prefers not to look into the lens, because it makes her uncomfortable. A few hours after the shoot I receive her written reply to my three short questions:

“Financially, I keep my income for myself and my daughter. My finances are mainly separated from those of my partner. So, as a single earner, being a housewife is not an option; that would be practically impossible.

That brings us to equality in my personal life. My friend and I find it very important to do everything together, both at home and outside. We try to make all decisions together. For me, it is no longer an option to stay at home with the children while the man is away. The reason I got divorced is that my ex-husband was always away for his hobby and I had to stay home with my daughter. Today, I feel much happier. We can share everything together.

My partner considers himself as a ‘new man’ who helps with certain household tasks. My daughter and my friend’s children are aware of the fact that he cooks and does other tasks. I am mainly doing the laundry and I’m there for comforting, talking, supporting homework or solving practical problems. And that's fine by me.

Unfortunately, I do see inequality at work. Personally, I think men are more agitated and less capable of handling stress. They whine more easily than women, who just keep on working. Undoubtedly, women earn less despite doing the same job and often doing it better. This has always been the case and I don’t expect much future change.
